Formula 1 has announced the launch of its second esports championship, this time the competition is dedicated to mobile racers.
The F1 Mobile Racing Esports Series begins on September 7th, with qualification leagues running for the next three months.
The top performers from each of the monthly leagues will qualify for the finals, which will be a nine-day tournament to determine the inaugural champion of the F1 Mobile Racing Esports Series.
The company also runs the F1 Esports Series, which will be presented by Aramco for its fourth season. In May 2019, Ferrari was the tenth and final team to join the esports series.
Dr. Julian Tan, Head of Digital Business Initiatives and Esports at Formula 1, discussed the creation of the championship in a release: “Mobile esports is a booming industry as Gen Zs and Gen Alpha spend more time gaming and on their phones. We see huge potential to develop our product set and expertise in this area in our ongoing effort to reach out and build our younger fanbase, providing ever more touchpoints for them to engage with Formula 1.
“This is part of F1’s strategy to continue making the sport more accessible to our fans through gaming and esports, especially with F1 Mobile Racing developed by Codemasters being completely free to download and with participation being free and open to all. We are excited to kick off our search for our inaugural F1 Mobile Racing Esports Champion 2020!”
Esports Insider says: Considering how successful the F1 Esports Series has been over the last four years, it’s no surprise to see Formula 1 expand its esports presence with a mobile championship. This is a promising development for mobile esports, too, which is always nice as we see it as a vital part of the industry in the future.
