Ty Gwerder plays down talk of rustiness after Bellator 246 win: ‘It’s all in your head’

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Ty Gwerder put the pedal to the metal in the gym as soon as COVID restrictions lifted and, when he was granted the opportunity to fight, he didn’t disappoint.

Gwerder (5-1 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) returned to action on the preliminary card at Bellator 246 at Mohegan Sun Arena, and marked his first appearance of 2020 with his maiden Bellator win as he defeated British middleweight George Tokkos (4-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) via third-round TKO.

Despite the enforced time on the sidelines and limited access to his gym, Gwerder said he didn’t feel any rustiness as he made his first appearance in more than nine months.

“Honestly, I don’t really believe in the whole rust thing,” Gwerder told reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage after his victory. “It’s all in your head. If you feel like you’ve got rust, you’re gonna perform like you’ve got rust.”
