UFC on ESPN 27 play-by-play and live results

LAS VEGAS – MMA Junkie is on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 27 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT).

UFC on ESPN 27 takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

In the main event, Cory Sandhagen (14-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) takes on former bantamweight champ T.J. Dillashaw (16-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC). Dillashaw has been out since a January 2019 loss to Henry Cejudo, after which he was suspended for two years for a positive erythropoietin test.

Diana Belbita vs. Hannah Goldy

Round 1 – Goldy with a high kick, but Belbita comes rushing froward with aggressive punches early. Goldy circles away and looks to reset. She continues flashing out the high kick, but Belbita is answering back with stiff punches and sharp low kicks. Goldy rushes forward and into the clinch, driving the action to the fence. Belbita defends well there, and Goldy has to back away, though she lands a stiff punch as she does. Back in the center, and Belbita scores with the low kick again. She’s using long punches at range, as well. Stiff right hand lands and drops Goldy. Belbita follows to the floor with more punches but backs away. Goldy follows, but she’s still wobbly as she returns to the feet. Belbita swarming, but Goldy scores with the takedown. Wild exchange, and both women take a moment to recover on the floor. Goldy backs away with less than two minutes. Belbita swarming again, and Goldy has to clinch. Her face is bloodied as she controls from the outside. Knees traded inside. Belbita creates some space and lands a late flurry to close. Good round. MMA Junkie gives it to Belbita, 10-9.

Round 2 – Goldy again opens with the high kick, and Belbita answers with a flurry of punches. Belbita adds a low kick behind her punches. Goldy fires back with two big right hands, but Belbita walks through it and continues to pop the jab. She scores with a right hand. Goldy able to wrap the body and drives the action to the cage again. She’s looking for the trip but can’t get it. Belbita back in the center and lands from range. Her straight punches are scoring in bunches. Goldy to the clinch again but can’t seem to get anything going from the position. Knees traded inside. Belbita defending well in the clinch, staying upright, and Goldy has to back away again. Under two minutes. Back to the combinations for Belbita, adding the low kick at the end. She’s sharp on the feet. Goldy’s nose busted up. Goldy finding moments with her hands, but she gets cracked back every single time. Goldy does score with a clean high kick, but Belbita walks through it and keep firing. They end on the feet, and MMA Junkie gives it to Belbita, 10-9.

Round 3 – Goldy’s corner asking her to press, but Belbita with the volume again to open. The low kick continues to chew up Goldy’s lead leg. She scores to the body, as well. Goldy lands a big right hand. Pace remains high in the final round. Goldy scores again with the high kick, but Belbita answers back with two punches and a low kick. Belbita kicks high, as well, then continues pressing with punches. Her work rate is very high, constantly moving and findign angles. Huge right hand lands, and Goldy is hurt. She staggers back to the cage but doesn’t fall. She moves into the clinch again, but Belbita continues to show solid defense in the position. Knees traded, and Belbita working to get off the fence. Belbita working knees but almost gets her leg trapped for the takedown, so she sets it back down. Goldy breaks free with one minute left and punches as she exits. Back and forth on the feet. Goldy hoping for something, and she gets a late takedown. She moves to mount and is pounding away. Big punches and elbows to close, but it goes to the final bell. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Goldy, 10-9, but awards the fight to Belbita, 29-28. Could easily be a clean sweep.

Sijara Eubanks vs. Elise Reed

Round 1 – Eubanks rushes forward and is across the cage quickly. Reed tries to kick to keep her away, but Eubanks in tight and changes levels, immediately bringing the fight to the floor. Half-guard for Reed, but Eubanks knee cuts through and moves out to side control. She tries to isolate the arm, but Reed keeps it in tight and gets back to half-guard. Eubanks postures up and strikes as she looks to pass. She’s able to step over to mount while punching. Eubanks picking her shots and briefly turns for the armbar. Reed keeps her limbs tight, so Eubanks moves back to mount and is patiently punching and landing elbows from the dominant position. Reed bucks well and gets Eubanks off-balance but can only push her off to side control. Reed scrambles back to half-guard. Eubanks advances again to the side and then mount. Reed trying to punch off her back, but Eubanks unleashes a vicious barrage off punches from the top, and this fight is over. Big win for Eubanks.

Julio Arce vs. Andre Ewell

Round 1 – Ewell takes the center and feints before firing the jab. Arce moving well on the outside and fires out a few low kicks. Both men light on their feet and hunting for openings. Front kick from Ewell countered with a big left hand from Arce. Ewell resets and fires a long left hand, but it’s countered again. Both men finding a home for punches, but Arce’s seems to have a little more zip right now. Arce starting to get a little more aggressive now, too. Ewell still moving well and picking his shots, but Arce landing the cleaner shots. Big left hand scores. They trade in tight in the pocket, and Arce scores with a kick to the body. Arce with a high kick. Ewell lands a low kick and a nice right hand, and Arce moves into the clinch and drives his opponent to the fence. Round ends there, and MMA Junkie gives it to Arce, 10-9.

Round 2 – Ewell pushes forward with low kicks to start. Arce pushes forward with punches, and they trade again. No feeling out this round. Arce pressing from the center, and Ewell moving laterally near the fence. Arce mixing in kicks to the body. Arce kicks the leg. Arce keeping the pressure high. He lands a couple of big left hands to the body. Arce reaches with a front kick but gets tagged with two counter punches. Ewell out to the center now and trying to pick up his volume. Kicks traded. Arce pumping the jab and slips away. Left hand lands clean for Arce, and Ewell is hurt. He smiles as he staggers back to the cage, but Arce sees it. Arce swarming with punches. Ewell desperately trying to recover, but Arce lands clean with a few more big shots, and referee Chris Tognoni calls it off while the action is still on the feet. Ewell didn’t fall but was clearly taking some damage.

Mickey Gall vs. Jordan Williams

Round 1 – Williams with an early low kick. He’s in the center and presses forward with a flurry of punches down the middle. Galls fires back and tags him. He lands clean with a right, and Williams is hurt, and Gall drives him to the canvas. Williams recovers quickly and sits up. Gall tries for the guillotine, but it’s not there. They scramble back to the feet and continue trading punches. Williams seems to be clear, and he lands a big left hand. Gall trying to answer back, but he catches a thumb in the eye. Williams apologizes, and we take a break. Williams again moving forward on the restart, but Gall lands again and stuns his opponent. Gall grabs the guillotine and rags the action down, rolling to the top. Williams scrambles, and Gall moves to the back. Gall battling the hands, but Gall goes from one side to the next until he finally gets the right arm under and immediately hides the left hand behind the head and falls back. Williams tries to slide away but is trapped and has to tap. Impressive.

Ian Heinisch vs. Nassourdine Imavov

Round 1 – Heinisch with an early high kick that’s blocked. He charges forward with a left hand. Imavov counters with a flying knee, but Heinisch able to push through it and move to the clinch. Imavov battles his way off the fence and lands a front kick to the body. Heinisch chops at the legs and the moves laterally, staying out of the pocket. He works the legs a bit more. Imavov scores with a slick jab. He launches another flying knee that brings him to the clinch. Heinisch trying to use the fence to peel him away. Imavov tries to slip to the back. Heinisch able to turn inside and tries for the trip before backing away. Imavov with a slick jab. Right hand scores. Heinisch’s face busted up a bit. He kicks the legs and shoots from range. Imavov off-balance but rolls and gets back to his feet. Heinisch scores with a crisp jab and narrowly avoids a stepping knee from Imavov. High kick glances over the top for Imavov. Heinisch’s right is bloodied. Heinisch pushes forward at the close, and they trade strikes until the bell. MMA Junkie gives the first to Imavov, 10-9.

Round 2 – Heinisch misses an early low kick. Imavov works the jab. Heinisch trying to pressure, but Imavov moving well. Heinisch chops the leg. Imavov again with the knee before firing big hooks as counters. Heinisch trying to land big punches, but Imavov moving well and countering with crisp punches. Big flurry, and Imavov with a takedown. He tries to slip to the back, but Heinisch able to scramble back to his feet. Heinisch having success working the legs, but Imavov countering over the top with pinpoint punches. Imavov patient as he walks forward, but it’s relentless aggression. He lands clean, and Heinisch staggers. He’s hurt. Imavov sees it. Knee lands, and Heinisch falls to a knee. He’s leaning against the cage. Imavov unleashing punches. Heinisch trying to cover and stand, but the barrage isn’t slowing, and referee Mark Smith waves it off.

Brendan Allen vs. Puna Soriano

Round 1 – Allen fakes a kick, and Soriano sees him pull it back and fires one of his own. Big punches from Soriano early, but Allen covers well against the cage and then slips away. Left scores for Soriano. Another lands, and Soriano slips away before it’s countered. Soriano with a few kicks to the body, as well. Allen counters with a few crisp jabs. Allen trying to walk forward, but Soriano answers with powerful hooks that force him to back away. Soriano throwing with big power shots. Allen answering with crisp jabs. He fires a knee up the middle, as well. Soriano with a kick to the body, but Allen answers with a slapping low kick. Allen with the clean punches up the middle. He’s starting to dig in a little and trade. Soriano lands a few more big left hands. He walks into a knee, but he walks through it. Allen briefly grabs the neck, but Soriano able to battle through that and pull away, where he lands another big left hand. Allen with two crisp punches, walking through those big punches to trade, and he fires a knee maybe just after the bell. MMA Junkie gives the first to Soriano, 10-9.

Round 2 – Allen with a few big kicks to the body. Soriano misses over the top and has to cartwheel to stay on his feet. Allen with a sharp low kick. He’s moving well. Another big kick to the body. Knee lands. Soriano appears hurt, and Allen tries to capitalize but eats a left hand. Allen tries to shoot, but Soriano sprawls well. Soriano slowing a little. He drives a big left to the body. Allen again with the big kick to the body, and the left side of Soriano’s torso is bright red. Soriano with a flurry of punches, but Allen walks through it and moves back to the middle. Another Soriano left to the body. Allen again with a big kick to the body. That one hurt, and Soriano pauses for a moment. His right eye is busted up a bit, as well. Soriano catches a kick and gets Allen off-balance but can’t push forward to capitalize. He misses a big leaping punch. Kicks traded, and Allen lands to the groin, but Soriano says he’s OK. Soriano blocks a knee and lands two punches in reply. Allen again to the body with a big kick before the bell. MMA Junkie gives it to Allen, 10-9.

Round 3 – Soriano blocks a kick and fires a straight right. Allen working the jab well. Knee scores inside. Big left for Soriano. Body kick for Allen, and Soriano answers with two big punches that land. Allen shows nothing. His chin is impeccable. Allen still working he body with those big kicks. Uppercut scores for Allen. Soriano trying to load up on big punches, and he’s finding the mark, but Allen just walking through it and throwing back with combinations. Allen digs the body. Jab scores. Allen clearly the fresher fighter, and he’s boxing well. One minute left, and Soriano’s corner calls for volume. he unleashes a few big punches, but he’s too tired to keep it going. Allen again to the body with a big kick. Allen just keeps busy with crisp punches and a kick. They trade shots until the end. Fun one there. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Allen, 10-9, and awards him the fight 29-28.

Round 1 – Yanez with an early low kick. He blocks a high kick shortly after. Costa kicks low, then misses high. Yanez with a spinning kick that comes up short. Costa very busy with kicks to start. Yanez starting to work the jab a bit. Costa does the same, doubling it up and landing a big right. Costa rifling off the jab and scoring clean. Yanez’s nose reddened. They trade jabs. Costa setting the pace right now. His jab is on fire. Right hand comes behind it. Yanez’s nose busted up and bleeding. Yanez swinging back, but he’s just a step behind. He does score with a right, and now Yanez picking it up with pressure. Costa’s nose now bleeding, as well. Costa right hand scores. High kick lands. Yanez starting to land more frequently, and he scores to the body. They end on the feet. MMA Junkie gives the first to Costa, 10-9.

Round 2 – Yanez out a little quicker this time and working the legs. Costa back to the jab, and it scores clean. Yanez trying to match the pace this time. He’s pumping the jab, but Costa using his reach well and scoring from range. Yanez now doubling up the jab. Costa wipes at his face a little as the blood is starting to flow. Yanez starting to set the pace. Jab scores. He digs to the body. He scores clean with an uppercut. Costa is hurt and drops to a knee. He’s trying to cover, but Yanez ripping punches non-stop, and this is stopped. Big shift in momentum to finish.

Barber’s corner warning her to stay away from the cage. Maverick with a low kick. High kick blocked. Barber misses on a pair of punches. Maverick with a big kick to the body. Barber scores with a high kick, but Maverick answers. Punches traded. Kicks traded. Maverick with two punches and a low kick. Maverick using a lot of kicks in her attacks. She rushes forward with punches, as well. Barber with a big left hand, but Maverick answers right back and fires in a few big kicks, as well. Maverick’s kicks to the body are scoring. Punches traded at the end. MMA Junkie gives the first to Maverick, 10-9.

Round 2 – Maverick gets the center once again, and she’s the one starting most of the attacks. Barber does land a nice right hand that slows things down. Maverick still using a lot of kicks. She looks the stronger fighter when she presses forward. They clinch in the center, and Maverick drives the action to the cage. Barber defends well, so Maverick backs away. Barber rushes forward and actually scores a takedown. Maverick with the whizzer, and she’s able to get back up, but Barber tags her with a strikes and then stays in tight on the clinch. Maverick tries to turn in and grab the head, but Barber slips to the back. Maverick has to scramble, but she pulls free. Barber pressing and walks into a knee. They’re trading punches in tight. Barber picking up the aggression. Maverick changes levels and drives through for the takedown. Barber scrambles, but Maverick gets to her back. Barber tries to tripod and shake, but Maverick is firm on the back. Maverick short on time for the choke, so she punches to the end. MMA Junkie gives it again to Maverick on the late work, 10-9.

Round 3 – Maverick with two big left hands to start. Low kick scores. Barber fires a big right. Barber kicks to the body. Short right hand scores.They take turns trading punches from range. Barber still moving well and is having moments, but Maverick keeping a high pace. Big punches traded in close. Pace remains high. Barber leaps in with a big left from range. Outside trip lands perfectly for Barber. Slick timing there. Maverick scrambles up, and Barber tries to get the back but can’t. Maverick scrambles up and pulls away. Barber seems the fresher fighter now. Maverick still dangerous though. Both women land with big punches. Barber drives into the clinch and pushes it to the fence. She’s wrapped the body and trying for a trip. Not there, but she lands a big shoulder strike in tight. Maverick defending against the fence. She’s firing short punches in tight. Spinning elbow from Barber as they break. She scores a big right hands. Maverick swinging back. Barber looks takedown at the bell. Fun fight.
