UFC on ESPN 15 pre-event facts: Frankie Edgar looks to join exclusive club

The fourth of five UFC events in August goes down Saturday with UFC on ESPN 15. The event takes place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas and airs on ESPN/streams on ESPN+.

A key bantamweight fight takes place in the main event. Pedro Munhoz (18-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) is set to welcome Frankie Edgar (23-8-1 MMA, 17-8-1 UFC) down to his third UFC weight class as the former UFC lightweight champion moves down from featherweight after fighting for the belt three times.

Pedro Munhoz

Munhoz returns to competition for the first time since June 8, 2019. The 441-day layoff is the longest of his more than six-year UFC career.

Munhoz’s six stoppage victories in UFC bantamweight competition are fourth most in divisional history behind T.J. Dillashaw (eight), Marlon Vera (eight) and Urijah Faber (seven).

Munhoz’s three submission victories in UFC bantamweight competition are tied for fifth most in divisional history behind Faber (six), Rani Yahya (five), Aljamain Sterling (four) and Vera (four).

Munhoz’s three knockdowns landed at UFC 227 are tied for the UFC single-fight bantamweight record along with Hugo Viana (TUF 16 Finale) and Andre Soukhamthath (UFC Fight Night 114).

Frankie Edgar

Edgar, the former UFC lightweight champion, drops to bantamweight after a 13-fight stint in the featherweight division.

Edgar can become the 11th fighter in history to earn victories in three different UFC weight classes.

Edgar’s five losses in UFC championship fights are tied with B.J. Penn for second most in company history behind Randy Couture (six).

Edgar’s total fight time of 7:15:51 in UFC competition is the most in company history.

Edgar’s 1,568 significant strikes landed in UFC competition are fourth most in company history behind Max Holloway (2,173), Joanna Jedrzejczyk (1,711) and Donald Cerrone (1,597).

Edgar’s 68 takedowns landed in UFC competition are tied for fourth most in company history behind Georges St-Pierre (90), Gleison Tibau (84) and Demetrious Johnson (74).

Edgar’s 259 total strikes landed against Cub Swanson at UFC Fight Night 57 are the second most in a single UFC/WEC featherweight contest behind Max Holloway’s 307 against Brian Ortega at UFC 231.

Edgar’s submission of Swanson at the 4:56 mark of Round 5 at UFC Fight Night 57 is tied for the third-latest stoppage in a UFC bout behind Demetrious Johnson at UFC 186 (4:59, Round 5) and Yair Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 139 (4:59, Round 5).

Edgar is one of two fighters in UFC history to defeat a single opponent on three separate occasions inside the octagon. He did so against Penn. Tito Ortiz also accomplished the feat against Ken Shamrock.

Edgar is the only fighter in UFC history to suffer three knockdowns in a single round and not lose the fight. The feat occurred in his UFC 125 draw with Gray Maynard.

Saint Preux competes in his 21st UFC light heavyweight bout, tied with Mauricio Rua for the second most appearances in divisional history behind Jon Jones (22).

Saint Preux’s 11 victories since 2013 in UFC light heavyweight competition are the most in the division.

Saint Preux’s 10 stoppage victories in UFC light heavyweight competition are tied with Jones for second most in divisional history behind Glover Teixeira (11).

Mariya Agapova (9-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), 23, is the youngest of the 22 fighters scheduled to compete at the event.

Shana Dobson’s (3-4 MMA, 1-3 UFC) three-fight losing skid is the longest of her career. She hasn’t earned a victory since December 2017.

Daniel Rodriguez vs. Takashi Sato

Takashi Sato

Takashi Sato (16-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) makes his second UFC appearance in a 56-day stretch. He beat Jason Witt at UFC on ESPN 12 on June 27.
